While tripping North Bengal, don’t forget to take a halt at the place of twin lakes – Jorepokhri.

At an altitude of 7400 ft. Jorpokhri is situated as a tiny hilltop destination that is enriched with its own Himalayan beauty and serenity. You can spend some relaxing hours just sitting on the lakes to enjoy the scenic landscape of the place. Jorpokhri is actually a part of Senchal forest where you would love to have a leisure walk through the series of pine trees. At one side of the lake there is a shaded view point from where you would be able to capture the majestic view of Darjeeling and Kurseong towns.

While heading towards Mirik, you may take a one-night halt at Jorpokhri hamlet which is just 19km from Darjeeling town. Main feature of Jorpokhri is its twin lakes from which its name has been originated. Literally ‘Jor’ means ‘two’ and ‘Pokhri’ means ‘lakes’. These natural twin lakes at the center of a hilltop area are enough to enchant you at your first glance. Jorpokhri is also the house of Salamanders which were seemed to become extinct in 1964. If you are paying a visit here during rainy season, you will definitely get a glance of these lizard-like small amphibians in these lakes.

Day 1

Taking a stop at Jorpokhri

I started my journey from Darjeeling in any early morning so that I could reach to Jorpokhri by noon. After freshening up and having a piping hot lunch at my hotel room I went out for exploring the place at late afternoon. Twin lakes of Jorpokhri are concertized with spacious seating arrangements where I loved to spend some beautiful moments by seeing the beauty of the water area. The lake is also decorated with a model snake and a fountain at its centre. I enjoyed an evening walk through the landscaped gardens of this area. Enjoying a healthy dinner at the hotel I longed for a good sleep in the chilly weather of Jorpokhri.

Day 2

A roam around Jorpokhri

At Jorpokhri, my morning was started with a cup of aromatic Darjeeling tea at the terrace of the bungalow. After finishing a healthy breakfast, I rushed outside for paying a short visit at the nearby Senchal forest where I was pleased to have a long walk through the dense series of pines. On my way I came across variety of unknown birds and animals. Then I took the paved pathway which leads to a stairway from whose top I was mesmerized by the majestic view of the towns of Darjeeling and Kurseong. On a clear sunny day you would also get a chance to see the snow lad Kanchenjunga Mountain from this view point. Spending some more relaxing hours around the lake I opted for having mouth-watering lunch at the roadside eateries. After lunch I packed my bag and headed towards my next destination. On prior request, you may get a hired car or shared vehicle from your hotel to reach at Siliguri or Darjeeling or any of your pre-planned destination. The scenic beauty and fresh oxygen of Jorpokhri will compel you to pay a visit here again.
